There has been a great interest in the Indus signs since its discovery in the 1920s, leading to a wide range of literature on the subject. The material is of varied nature and is important for students of the Indus Civilization. However, obtaining a reliable and nearly complete list of this literature is not necessarily easy.
My mentor, Dr. Kaleemullah Lashari, who is Pakistan’s foremost archaeologist, historian, and author in this century, has done tremendous work in the field of archaeology. He assigned me the responsibility of compiling a bibliography on the Indus Valley Civilization. This was a challenging task, and Dr. Lashari handed over to me two well-known works, including Gregory L. Possehl’s effort to compile a comprehensive list, which was supported by Prof. Harold Dibble of the University of Pennsylvania. The list provided in Asko Parpola’s Deciphering the Indus Script was also crucial.
Since much time has passed and more works have been published on the Indus script and the civilization that flourished in the Indus floodplains, there is a need to update the existing listings. A comprehensive compilation has now been made available for this website.
It would be highly appropriate to indicate any omissions in the present list to help keep it updated further.
